Who should get a trained dog?

A trained dog is for anyone who values their time and their belongings. It is for those who prefer serenity to turbulence or would rather a professional did the job than having to do it yourself. It is for those who would like to bypass house training and obedience training and bring home a ready-made family dog. Many of these labs are also suitable for those of you who are interested in pursuing obedience trials.

You must be willing to learn how to communicate with the dog, because if the owner does not keep up the training practices, new undesirable behaviors can show up. I am here to help along the way, so as long as you are on board with this, you will have a great dog.

What does the training include?

The dogs get trained in obedience, manners, house breaking and socialization. My objective is to provide you with a trained family dog, and to train you how to handle the dog and how to continue reinforcing the current training.

My trained labs walk well on or off-leash. They sit, stay and come, on and off-leash. They learn to jump through a hoop and to walk up and down a ramp. They are trained in tandem with another dog so they are comfortable walking in tandem and performing all commands in the presence of other dogs.

Manners training means no jumping on people and things, no nuisance barking, sitting before receiving attention, and just being pleasant around people. They are crate trained and socialized in town. I take them to busy streets, hardware stores and restaurants, and sometimes to a nursing home.

There is a re-homing process with my trained dogs (if older than eight months), to avoid unnecessary trauma to the dog and for the new owner to become more familiar with the dog. This usually involves the new owner coming here to interact with the dog and to learn how the dog operates (what commands and training style I use). I will then take the dog to the new home and make sure everything goes well. Normally I visit the new home 3-4 times before the dog is ready to transition permanently. There is no additional fee for the re-homing process if you live within a one hour drive from me.

My goal is for everyone to be happy with their new dog. After the dog comes home with you there is a two week trial period. If for any reason something is unsatisfactory, we can either try another dog or you will receive a refund.

How is the value of a trained dog determined?

My trained labs are born and raised at Labracadabra, so everything about their past is known. They are AKC registered and spayed or neutered. I have labs of different ages as some people prefer a dog who has fully outgrown the puppy stage. Sometimes a male dog who was kept as a potential sire gets neutered and trained at a more advanced age. These dogs are usually top dogs in every way.

I usually train two or three puppies from every litter born here. The training fee for a small puppy is $400/week in addition to the base price of the dog (which ranges from $1550-2550). On average, small puppies are trained for three weeks.

When determining the value of a trained dog I consider the following:

* Selective breeding. These dogs are specifically chosen for their even temperaments and willingness to learn.

* The amount of time it took me to train the dog.

* Care of the dog which includes food, daily care, veterinary care, recurring deworming, heartworm and flea preventative.

* The dogs are certified healthy by a licensed veterinarian.

* Damages to walls, furniture, shoes, electric cords, appliances etc. that an untrained dog sometimes causes. The good part is that all that happens here and not in your home.

The average cost of a trained adult or young adult lab is $6500. The average cost of a trained young puppy is $3500.

What is the process for getting a trained lab?

The first step is to fill out a home approval questionnaire. Please email me through the contact page and I will send you the questionnaire. There are two basic requirements: Another dog in the household, somewhat close in age to the newcomer, and a large fenced-in yard. I can always match up two compatible labs if you do not have another dog. There is a discount when you get two dogs from me. Sometimes I can make exceptions to these requirements, depending on your situation.

The second step is for you to tell me more details about your situation and preferences, so I can best assess if I have a dog who could be a good fit.

The third step is for you to come for a visit and meet the dogs. If you like a particular dog, we can begin the process of familiarizing the dog and you with each other. I will share my training methods and commands (which you must learn) with you and we will schedule the first visit with the dog to your home.

The fourth step happens after I have made 3-4 visits to your home and you have made a few trips here. When I see that the dog is comfortable and trusting in your presence, and that you are at ease handling the dog, he will come home with you and the two week trial period will begin. I will call you frequently and help with any issues. During these two weeks you have the option of bringing the dog back for a full refund. Remember that we are dealing with living beings, and not everything is predictable.

The fifth and final step is when I get to congratulate you on your new family member and also remind you that I am here to help you with any dog related advice, now or later.
